Fill-in-the-blank story game

Pick a story, give it the words it asks for without peeking, then reveal a story that makes no sense at all. 32 original stories for kids, teens and grown-ups.

Who’s playing?

KidsThe Moon Bakery

Word 1 of 16

A describing word, like fluffy or enormous.

How to play

  1. Pick a story. Choose one from the list, press Surprise me, or browse the story shelf below. Each story is marked Kids, Teens or Grown-ups, and all of them are clean.
  2. Fill in the words. The game asks for one word at a time: a noun, a verb ending in -ing, a color, a silly word. You never see the story while you answer, and that is the whole joke. Stuck? Press Random word.
  3. Reveal it and read it out. Your words drop into the story. Read it aloud, copy it, download it, or play the same story again with new words.

Playing with a group? One person holds the phone and asks everyone else for words, then reads the finished story out loud. Teachers can print a word sheet and a story sheet for any story on the printable word games page.

The game also tidies up your grammar as it goes: it picks “a” or “an” to suit your word, and gives a word that starts a sentence its capital letter.

Questions

Do I need an account or an app?

No. The game runs in your web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install, and your answers are never sent anywhere.

Are the stories okay for children?

Yes. All the stories are clean. The Kids stories are set at school, the zoo or space camp; the Teens and Grown-ups stories are about group chats, school dances, office meetings and dinner parties, and are still family-friendly.

What if someone doesn’t know what an adverb is?

Every prompt shows a one-line hint with examples, and Random word fills one in. The parts of speech helper explains each kind of word for kids and has a short practice quiz.

Can we write our own story?

Yes. The story game maker lets you write a story with blanks in square brackets, like [noun], then play it, print it or share it as a link.
